My all time favorite band returned Tuesday by giving away their brand new single. The song, “Violent Hill” is offered through Coldplay’s official Web site. The site asks for the user’s email address and postcode details, after which an automatically-generated email is sent with instructions for downloading. This track will be the first single from their highly anticipated fourth studio album titled, “Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends” which will arrive June 17 via Capitol Records.
As for the new single, the U.K. quartet collaborated with one of the best producers and musicians in rock history, Brian Eno (U2, Talking Heads) who also produced the rest of the upcoming album. Eno holds a reputation for pushing artists out of their comfort zones and into new territory. Evidently, “Violet Hill” has a harder, more experimental sound than previous Coldplay releases. The track begins with a lengthy ambient intro, then Chris Martin’s voice and piano break into a stately ballad, only to be interrupted by electric guitar riffs and thumping kick drum. Nearing the final seconds, the song returns to a much more reassuring Coldplay sound.
This is not the only thing Coldplay is giving away. As a part of ongoing promotions for the new album, the band will be performing three free shows which will take place June 16 in London and June 23 at Madison Square Garden in New York. The third show (at a date to be determined) will be performed in Barcelona, Spain, where most of the album was recorded. And don’t forget the band will be in Pemberton, BC in August headlining the music festival.
